One of my favorite birthday/Christmas gifts was a weekend trip to New York City. For my birthday my husband gave me a coupon saying we were going to travel to New York City in March of the next year and for my birthday he gave me a coupon for ‘Hamilton’ tickets while we were in New York.
March finally came around, and we hopped on a plane for our ‘quiet weekend away’. We checked into the hotel then headed out for a brisk walk for lunch in the snow. Leaving the hotel, my husband grabbed by the shoulders, and rushed me out a side door.
Several hours later, my husband had made reservations for dinner and reluctantly we headed out in the freezing snow. When we got there, our hostess was leading us to our table when my husband grabbed my hand and took a hard left. I was so confused! He then stepped to the side… where there was a table with my kids and their spouses yelling… ‘Surprise! Happy Birthday!’ At that point the restaurant became very quiet, and all eyes were on our little family as I was SHOCKED, full of happy tears, and hugging the necks of everyone! My husband had flown out our kids and spouses to spend the entire weekend with us! His plan was that everyone would do whatever they wanted during the day, and in the evening we would get together and hear all about each other’s days. My husband also got tickets to Hamilton for everyone. After attending an amazing performance, our daughter-in-law, who several years ago, happened to have done some acting with the now lead character playing Hamilton, got us backstage passes to meet Hamilton, his mom, and a few other members of the cast. It was great to see the workings of the play, and to see how small that stage (and backstage) really were! The last day there we spent the day together doing all the touristy things. This weekend was one of the most amazing weekends, hanging out with all four of my adult kids.
I was so excited for our ‘quiet weekend away’ to see Hamilton in New York. I had no idea that my husband had much more instore for all of us. Never in my wildest dreams could I have imagined that my family would be meeting us there, and that we would hang out all weekend in such a fun city. My husband gave us all a weekend we will never forget, and that out shone everything we had hoped for or could dream about.
It’s crazy to think about everything that God has promised us, how much He has given us, how much He can do in us and through us, and yet He tells us that He will do infinitely more then we could ever ask.
“Never doubt God’s mighty power to work in you and accomplish all this. He will achieve infinitely more than your greatest request, your most unbelievable dream, and exceed your wildest imagination! He will outdo them all, for his miraculous power constantly energizes you.” Ephesians 3:20
